Student creativity going global.

Cultural ambassadors for tomorrow’s world.

The Birmingham Sister Cities Young Artists and Authors Showcase offers local youth a global platform to drive conversations about building sustainable and resilient communities of the future. This international competition spotlights Birmingham students’ artistic talents and innovative thinking, challenging them to visualize and reimagine cities that can thrive in the face of climate change.

With the 2024 theme of “ClimateScape: Resilient Cities for Tomorrow’s Climate,” submissions across art, music, photography, and writing categories examine urban sustainability from youth perspectives. As a Sister Cities International member, Birmingham’s top entries will advance to the global showcase, connecting our students’ visions for their hometowns to a worldwide dialogue about fostering global cooperation and local solutions. There are cash prizes at both the local and international levels and the finalists in each category will be eligible for scholarships to attend the Sister Cities International Youth Leadership Summit in Washington, DC from August 5-9, 2024.

The showcase provides an impactful opportunity for Birmingham’s next generation of leaders and creators to make their voices heard on this pressing global issue. We invite community members to engage with these young artists and authors as they put forward their ideas for building resilient, sustainable cities here in Birmingham and around the world.

More about the Mentor Meetings.

Learning from the experts.

As students prepare their submissions, they will be able to sign up to meet 1-on-1 with two mentors who will provide expert guidance.

1) Thematic Mentor Meeting: The student meets with an expert on this year’s showcase theme -“ClimateScape: Resilient Cities for Tomorrow’s Climate.” They will help them brainstorm ideas for interpreting the theme and provide feedback as students write the required essay explaining how their art piece ties to envisioning sustainable, resilient cities of the future.

2) Creative Mentor Meeting: The student meets with an experienced artist, photographer, musician or writer who will advise them on technique, best practices, and innovating within the chosen submission category (Classic Art, Digital Art, Photography, Music, Writing, Poetry). Mentors will provide feedback and guidance to strengthen the student’s submission piece.

These optional 30-minute video calls will allow the student to get personalized advice from professionals as they develop a compelling, competitive submission that brings their unique perspective on urban resilience.
