Forging International Opportunity

The International Dual Enrollment Academy (IDEA) is a groundbreaking global studies program developed through a collaboration between Birmingham Sister Cities, Miles College, and Birmingham City Schools. This unique program offers students a transformative educational experience that integrates dual enrollment coursework, immersive cultural enrichment, and a travel abroad opportunity.

By participating in IDEA, students will cultivate essential skills, forge meaningful relationships, and gain valuable international experiences that will prepare them to thrive in our interconnected world.

The Academy recognizes the critical role that international exposure and opportunities play in fostering college readiness and setting students up for success in their chosen career paths. Through IDEA, students will have access to these pivotal elements, empowering them to develop a global perspective and a competitive edge in their future endeavors.

As a testament to the program’s commitment to student success, those who are accepted into IDEA and successfully complete the program requirements will be awarded a $500 stipend in recognition of their dedication and achievements.

Eligibility & Requirements

Students must attend a school within the Birmingham City Schools system. 

Students must be Juniors in the Spring of 2024 and planning to enter their Senior year in the Fall semester of 2024.  Some exceptions may made for current Sophomores planning to enter their Junior year in the Fall semester of 2024.

Students must meet all eligibility requirements established by Miles College for dual enrollment registration.

Students must have a 3.0 GPA. Some exceptions may be made students with lower GPAs if they show significant potential in non-academic areas.

Students must be available to attend all sessions outlined in the program calendar, including the uninterrupted 4-6 week courses, which for the summer session, will have students on campus Monday through Thursday from about 9am-2pm from June 3-July 11.
